Photographer and filmmaker Bobby Tonelli tested the Tamron 12–20mm F/2.8 in both Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount versions.
Loaned by Tamron Singapore for independent testing, the lens impressed him with its premium new design, compact internal-zoom construction, fast autofocus and excellent optical performance.
Bobby’s verdict: this could be one of the most exciting ultra-wide zoom lenses currently available.

Tamron’s New Premium Design
The 12–20mm F/2.8 introduces a completely new design direction for Tamron.
Its semi-gloss black finish, textured control rings and subtle champagne-gold accent give the lens a refined, neo-vintage appearance with a professional cinema-lens feel.
The aperture, focus and zoom rings are responsive and easy to operate. Physical switches and a built-in USB-C port also provide access to firmware updates and customisation through the Tamron Lens Utility software.
Compact Internal-Zoom Construction
The lens uses an internal zoom mechanism, so its physical length remains unchanged when moving between 12mm and 20mm.
Its short zoom rotation allows photographers to reframe quickly, while the compact body remains well balanced for travel, architecture, landscape and street photography.
The Sony E-mount version weighs approximately 570g, while the Nikon Z-mount version is slightly heavier because of its wider mount.
Impressive Close-Focusing Performance
The Tamron 12–20mm F/2.8 continues the brand’s strong close-up tradition.
It focuses as close as approximately:
- 0.18m at 12mm
- 0.28m at 20mm
This makes it possible to capture dramatic foreground subjects while still including a wide view of the surrounding environment. It is especially useful for creative travel photography, environmental details, food, products and wide-angle nature compositions.
Excellent Sharpness and Distortion Control
Bobby found the lens impressively sharp even when used wide open at F/2.8. For landscapes, interiors and architecture, stopping down to F/5.6 or F/8 delivers excellent detail across the frame.
Distortion is also well controlled. When the camera is kept level, architectural lines remain remarkably straight, reducing the need for heavy corrections during editing.
Fast Autofocus, Warm Colours and Defined Sun Stars
Tested on the Sony A9 III and Nikon Z8, the lens delivered fast, accurate and dependable autofocus with responsive subject tracking across different shooting conditions.
Its images show the warm, pleasing colour rendition associated with Tamron optics, with chromatic aberration and colour fringing kept to a minimum. At smaller apertures, bright light sources produce sharp and clearly defined sun stars, adding visual impact to landscapes, cityscapes, architecture and night photography.
Premium Packaging Experience
Tamron’s updated direction also extends to the packaging. The lens arrives in a minimalist, eco-conscious brown box and includes a magnetic folding protective cloth and redesigned lens hood. This improved presentation complements the lens’s more premium design and construction.
