Master In-Camera Magic: Essential Filmmaking Skills in the AI Era | Handcrafted
A hands-on filmmaking workshop with Donovan Wan, Cinematographer & Commercial Director

AI can generate a scene in seconds. But on a real set, filmmakers make decisions that depend on what is happening in front of them: how light falls on a subject, what a lens reveals, when to move the camera, and how one shot will connect to the next.
Handcrafted Videos with Tamron is a four-hour, hands-on workshop dedicated to those physical filmmaking skills. You’ll learn to create cinematic footage with practical physical filmmaking skills. You’ll learn to create cinematic footage with practical lighting, optical effects, camera movement, and Tamron lenses – building much of your visual look while you shoot. What you’ll learn
Create optical effects in camera
Discover how filmmakers use real objects and light to add character to a shot. You’ll see how pocket LEDs, prisms, and crystal bars can be placed near the front of a Tamron lens to create light leaks, flares, and striking close-up details. These effects happen as you film, giving you the chance to adjust them by eye on set.
Build physical transitions
The lecturers will demonstrate whip-pans, lens occlusions, practical match cuts, and prop framing. You’ll learn how to plan the end of one shot and the beginning of the next so the movement flows through your sequence.
Shape your look before editing
Explore how lighting, white balance, contrast, color settings, framing, and aperture influence the footage you capture. You’ll also learn how to use Tamron lens features – including fast apertures, zoom ranges, and close-up focus distances – to create depth and direct attention within a frame.
The aim is to make stronger creative decisions during the shoot, so less work is needed to establish the look later.
Solve creative problems on a real set
Filming rarely goes exactly as planned. You’ll practise working with physical subjects and props, and adjusting your approach when a shot needs something different. The workshop is also an opportunity to discuss creative control, originality, and the practical differences between filming a scene and generating one with AI.
What happens during the workshop?
The basics and the in-camera approach
We’ll begin with a discussion of filmmaking in the AI era and why skills such as lighting, composition, focus, and camera movement remain valuable. The lecturers will cover the camera settings and Tamron lens techniques you’ll use later in the session.
A break and time for questions
After the first session, there will be a 20-minute tea break with time to speak to the lecturers.
Live demonstrations
Watch the lecturers demonstrate physical transitions, camera movement, and practical props, followed by optical effects, flares, and close-up shots created with real light and glass. You’ll see how each technique works before trying it yourself.
A hands-on shooting challenge
The 20 participants will split into four groups of five. Your challenge is to shoot a 30–40 second sequence made up of four to six shots. You’ll use the techniques demonstrated earlier to create your visual effects and transitions physically while filming.
A simple edit and group screening
After the shoot, you’ll transfer your clips, assemble the sequence using straight cuts, and add one music track or ambient sound bed. There will be no color editing, digital filters, speed ramps, or added visual effects for the challenge. We’ll end by screening the videos and sharing feedback as a group. You’ll leave with footage you created through your own camera work – and practical techniques
you can try again on future shoots.
